Just two more nights
The end of the school year felt like the beginning of our great adventure. The adventure we've been looking forward to for two years has truly begun. We spent the first two weeks of the summer vacation at home, a period during which peace and stress alternated continuously. The house and paperwork had to be completely organized, all bags packed, and in between, we played football in the garden, met up with friends, relaxed, and organized a party.
We were able to organize a wonderful big party with many dear family and friends. There were many hugs and best wishes exchanged, with a few tears here and there. The next day, we did it all over again for all of Lily, Reef, and Maya's friends. These friends have become such a big part of their lives over the past few years, and now it's time to say goodbye... at least for now. But that 'for now' is incomprehensible to the children and feels like they are losing something dear.
When I closed my laptop and my vacation officially began, I felt completely 'zen' for a few days. Even though I was busy with chores and tasks, I felt wonderful and could fully relax. Unfortunately, that feeling was gone when a work incident was brought to my attention, and I was 'on' again. On the other hand, we had a great evening with my manager, who took the effort to come from Delft to Eenigenburg and personally support us.
A great relief came when we read that the children can attend school for the first three months on the Visa Waiver Visitor Visa. The long-term Student Visa for the children is delayed because the local Kaitoke school on Great Barrier Island has a process to go through to accept international students.
We spent most of our free hours storing household items and packing our travel luggage. This caused quite a bit of decision stress. We came across a lot of stuff. Things that might come in handy someday... things we didn't even know we had... things from the past... things of sentimental value... things that can go straight to the trash... and then there are the things we're taking to New Zealand. Luckily, we're allowed to bring 5 x (23kg checked baggage + 12kg carry-on + 8kg accessories) = 215kg of stuff with us.
It's now Sunday night, just before midnight. Only two more nights of sleep, and the moment of letting go has arrived.
